Have you ever considered a week of chamber music coaching in the mountains? In 2027 you can! The Colorado Chamber Music Institute is opening its doors to adult violinists, violists, cellists, guitarists and flutists. In a relaxed, pressure-free environment, you will make music with other adult musicians of every level, coached by our resident artists from the Twin-Cities based Lux String Quartet (www.luxstringquartet.com) and our wonderful institute faculty, all in the picturesque setting of Beaver Creek, Colorado.

Who Is the Adult Track For?

Adults who read music and play in tune, at any level of experience! Maybe you played seriously years ago and are ready to come back to it. Maybe you learned alongside your child in Suzuki lessons. Maybe you play now, in a community orchestra or on your own, and want to experience chamber music. All of you belong here. You do not need to have played chamber music before, and you do not need to bring a group.

No audition! When you register, we ask for a short description of your playing background and two placement videos: one of a piece you are working on now or have played recently, and one of scales of your choice. There is no fee for the videos. They are for placement purposes only: we use them to place you in a group with players who suit you and to choose music for your group.

What Your Week Includes

Every day, Monday through Friday:

A shared private lesson. You share a lesson with one other adult, and each of you receives 25 to 30 minutes of individual attention on your own playing. You also get to hear your partner’s lesson, which many players find is half the fun!

A coached ensemble. You will be placed in a small group of two to five players. Your group rehearses every day with a coach from the Lux String Quartet, preparing a piece over the week.

That is about two hours a day, which leaves plenty of time for the mountains, the village, or more music if you want it!

Parents of institute students: we will coordinate your schedule so you can still attend your child’s master classes.

Your week also includes:

The institute’s Sunday welcome party, open to everyone attending the institute that week
A joint coaching near the end of the week with our student ensembles, led by the Lux String Quartet, where adult and student groups play for each other and share feedback
An open invitation to the faculty concerts and other institute events throughout the week
The option to perform your group’s piece on the Friday evening concert at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, on the same concert as our CCMI students, if your group wishes to

Add Classes to Fill Out Your Day

Would you like more music in your day? Make your week fit your needs! The base program leaves plenty of free time, and if you have time for more, you can add any of these optional classes when you register. Each added class is $150 for the week, and with added classes your day can run to four or five hours.

Chamber Orchestra (teens and adults): play in the institute chamber orchestra alongside our young musicians
Music 101: a daily class covering one topic each day (chamber music, breathing, scales, tone production and posture), open to all instruments
Theory for Adults: music theory taught for adult players, for everyone who ever wished they had paid more attention to it the first time!
Improvisation: learn to play beyond the written page
Dalcroze: rhythm, listening and musicianship explored through movement

Tuition and Registration

Base program: $355 for the week (daily shared private lesson and daily coached ensemble)
Each added class: $150 for the week
Registration fee: $25

Lodging and meals are not included. Adult players arrange their own lodging and meals. We have discounted hotel rooms available if you would like to book through us, and the details come with your registration confirmation.

Space is limited by the number of lessons our faculty can teach each day, so we encourage you to register early!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to audition?
No! We ask for a short playing background and two placement videos (a current piece and scales), free of charge. They are for placement purposes only, to place you in a group.

How good do I need to be?
You need to read music and play in tune. Beyond that, experience level does not matter. Groups are formed from the placement videos so that players suit each other.

What is a shared private lesson?
A lesson shared by two adults, with 25 to 30 minutes of individual attention for each of you.

How much of the day is scheduled?
About two hours with the base program, and up to four or five hours with added classes. The rest of the day is yours!

Can I come with my own group?
Yes! Have each member register and tell us you are a group, and we will keep you together.

My child attends the institute. Can I join too?
Yes! Your lessons and coaching are scheduled during the institute day, and we will coordinate your schedule so you can still attend your child’s master classes.

Do I have to perform?
No. Every adult group has the option to perform its piece on the Friday evening concert at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, and the choice is yours.

Is lodging included?
No. You arrange your own lodging and meals, and discounted rooms are available if you book through us.

What if I have to cancel?
In the event that you decide to cancel your registration, please notify us in writing. There is a $250 non-refundable cancellation fee per participant. All other fees will be returned if written notice of cancellation is received by April 15th. Due to commitments to faculty, participants who withdraw after April 15th forfeit all fees.
